The Intersection of Nostalgia and Adventure

Dear Reader

Live from the Cincy Pool Club in Seminole, Florida

Ritual is a powerful asset in life and in writing. It's time matched with action, savoring the work. And work, my friends, is a form of art.

This is our fourth consecutive year vacationing at my Dad's home in Seminole, Florida, near St. Pete Beach. We started coming down here around 2016 when time and money aligned.

But things changed in 2020.

We had tickets booked for March 2020, but of course, we didn't make the trip. You know, Something Suddenly Came Up.

When we rebooked for 2021, something was different. The cancellation of our 2020 trip made the 2021 trip all the more special. 2022 showed up with a unique energy of nostalgia and adventure.

I think that's what ritual is all about, BTW: pairing up Nostalgia and Adventure.

2023's trip was unique when our home away from home became our actual home during the transition between our sold house and our new home... yet to be identified.

Ritual is a homebase for creativity. Creativity isn't always about something new, but something remixed and reimagined.

2024 is here, and as I sit to write this article, a bit of muscle memory is developing. I've sat at this poolside table before, clicking and clacking away on my MacBook Air M1 laptop, which I bought purely for the purpose of writing and creating.

Ritual is a powerful tool in writing. Very much like my trip, it's a homebase for your creative foundation. It's a nostalgic ode to future creation. It's a launchpad for adventure.

Ideas for creating a writing ritual:

  • Find a favorite location.
  • Pair it with a favorite beverage.
  • Elevate your tools, make your experience luscious.
  • Make it a consistent time. Saturday mornings are my favorite time to write.
  • Memorialize it by telling others about your writing ritual.
  • Start with one of these items... and grow the tradition.

Live from the Cincy Pool Club, I'm enjoying two rituals: an annual family vacation and poolside writing time.

Do you have a vacation or writing ritual?

Word of the Week

recreate

as in to restore
to bring back to a former condition or vigor

supporters of preservation hope to recreate the architectural splendor that the old movie theater had when it first opened

Merriam-Webster

I have always been enamored by the word recreate. It has the word create buried inside. It kind of ties into my theory of creativity, which needs a homebase of ritual. Our creativity is not just something new to discover but something we already possess. Creativity is to be sourced not found.

Busy entrepreneurs and creators our experts at helping others take action...but seem to always put off what is most important for themselves. Trust me, I get it. I had dreams of writing a book for years until I stumbled my way through writing my first book. After finishing my book I realized that I had developed an excellent strategy for writing a book in a flash. I call it the 90 Day Knockout. Anyway, I believe there are two main things that hold aspiring authors back. A writing ritual and an easy to deploy book framework. I touch on these topics in my weekly newsletter The Write Time, plus many other ideas and inspirations to help you write that first book.
