Anchoring Your Writing Ritual: From Lattes to Laptops

Dear Reader

Sugar N' Spice, everything nice. Last week, I met a longtime friend for lunch at Sugar n' Spice diner. It had been 8 years, and while we'd planned to chat about writing, we ended up mostly catching up. As we parted, she mentioned wanting to establish a writing habit. My quick tip? Embrace what I call "Luscious Writing" - creating a writing environment so good, you just crave more of it.

My luscious writing typically includes a vanilla latte in a ceramic mug, complete with a heart drawn in the foam. It feels decadent!

After our meeting, I pondered more on creating a writing habit. Two words came to mind: "ritual" and "anchor."

An anchor holds your boat in place in moving waters. Similarly, a writing ritual is a collection of anchors that hold you in place to explore and capture your thoughts.

Here are some of my anchors that have supported my writing ritual:

  1. The Luscious Experience
    • Vanilla latte in a ceramic mug
    • Cozy atmosphere
  2. Location and Tools
    • Red Tree Art and Coffee Shop or my front porch
    • MacBook Air (separate from work laptop)
    • Logitech oversized Bluetooth mouse
  3. Commitments
    • 730-day commitment to posting on LinkedIn
    • Weekly newsletter
    • Book projects
  4. Schedule
    • Appointment with myself
    • Saturday mornings at 10 am (my favorite writing time)
  5. Identity
    • I refer to myself as an author, writer, and creator
  6. Writer's Toolbox
    • Hemingway App for clear, punchy writing
    • Scrivener for books and larger works
    • Moleskine notebook, gel pens, and mechanical pencils
    • Notion for capturing ideas
    • ChatGPT for ideation and editing
    • Writing prompts to spark creativity

Remember, these anchors are for inspiration, not exact duplication. We all have unique schedules, strengths, passions, and tools.

As you build your writing ritual, it may develop organically, but you can strengthen it with strategic anchors. A great writing ritual is custom-made for you, likely including elements of luxury, tools, time commitments, peer support, and writing aids.

Keep it luscious!

Busy entrepreneurs and creators our experts at helping others take action...but seem to always put off what is most important for themselves. Trust me, I get it. I had dreams of writing a book for years until I stumbled my way through writing my first book. After finishing my book I realized that I had developed an excellent strategy for writing a book in a flash. I call it the 90 Day Knockout. Anyway, I believe there are two main things that hold aspiring authors back. A writing ritual and an easy to deploy book framework. I touch on these topics in my weekly newsletter The Write Time, plus many other ideas and inspirations to help you write that first book.
